Air India has made aviation history by becoming one of the first major global airlines to migrate entirely to a cloud-only IT infrastructure. The airline successfully closed its historical data centers in Mumbai and New Delhi, resulting in significant technological agility, scalability, and an anticipated annual net saving of nearly a million dollars.
Dr. Satya Ramaswamy, Chief Digital and Technology Officer at Air India, emphasized the strategic importance of embracing a ‘cloud-only’ computational infrastructure philosophy. The move goes beyond cost savings, driving innovation and providing a flexible and reliable computational and networking infrastructure for the airline.
The migration process, orchestrated by Air India’s top architects and engineers in Silicon Valley, Gurugram, and Kochi, involved transferring computational workloads from mainframes, servers, and a vast amount of data to the cloud. Dr. Ramaswamy acknowledged the contributions of colleagues who worked in the now-closed data centers, highlighting their integral role in the complex migration exercise.
Puneet Chandok, President of Microsoft India & South Asia, expressed pride in being part of Air India’s cloud transformation journey. The successful migration to Microsoft Azure showcases the power and adaptability of the Microsoft cloud, supporting global airline industry leaders like Air India.
With the complete movement to the cloud, Air India plans to accelerate its transformation journey, focusing on customer-facing channels and enhancing employee experiences. Cloud capabilities in advanced data analytics and AI, including Generative AI, will drive innovative applications throughout the company.
