Since Wednesday, 21st December, massive traffic delays caused by road construction on the approach to Cancun International Airport have prompted visitors to exit their cars, drag their luggage, and run to reach their flights on time.
As the problem progressed, local officials tried to devise a solution. Recent communication from the mayor assured travelers that the issue is being addressed.
As a result of the travel chaos to the airport, the mayor of Benito Juárez, Ana Patricia Peralta de la Pea, announced at midnight on Thursday, December 22, 2022, that new transport routes will be created from the city to the airport to assist with the flow of passengers during high season and the ongoing construction projects which are affecting traffic flow to the airport, forcing passengers to take their chances on foot.
This is not the first time airport traffic in Cancun has made headlines. During the month of August, travelers abandoned their airport transportation to continue their trip on foot. Plans were created and executed, and the flow of traffic gradually returned to normal (although remained busy).
The unifying thread connecting these incidents is an exceptionally busy tourism season. As Cancun continues to shatter tourist records, visitors should be informed that this may become more frequent.
