Demand for Air Travel in Europe At An All Time High: IATA Report

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released encouraging data indicating a strong resurgence in air travel demand across Europe.

In July 2024, passenger demand rose by 8% compared to the same month last year, showcasing the resilience of the aviation sector as it continues to recover from the impacts of the pandemic. Total passenger traffic, measured in revenue passenger kilometers (RPK), increased by 8.0% year-on-year.

International passenger demand saw an impressive rise of 10.1% compared to July 2023, indicating a robust appetite for cross-border travel. Domestic travel also experienced positive momentum, with a 4.8% increase in demand.

Airlines responded to the increased demand by expanding their capacity, with total available seat kilometers (ASK) rising by 7.4% compared to the previous year. The load factor, which measures the percentage of available seating capacity that is filled with passengers, reached 86.0%, a 0.5 percentage point increase from July 2023.

Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General, emphasized the importance of air travel in today’s world, stating that flying is essential for reuniting families, enabling exploration, and powering commerce. He called for urgent action to address persistent supply chain bottlenecks to ensure that air travel remains accessible and affordable.
