In a startling incident, the Fort Worth Fire Department (FWFD) has confirmed a gas explosion at the Sandman Signature hotel in downtown Fort Worth, Texas, causing injuries to at least 21 individuals.
The explosion, reported shortly after 3:30 pm local time, led to external portions of the historic hotel being forcefully propelled onto the street and an adjacent parking lot. While the cause of the explosion is under investigation, the FWFD emphasized that it is premature to determine if it was caused by a gas leak.
The downtown area reportedly had a gas odor, complicating the investigation. The FWFD spokesperson mentioned the uncertainty of whether the explosion or a pre-existing gas smell was the root cause.
At the time of the incident, 26 rooms were occupied, and individuals in the basement needed assistance for evacuation.
Josh Babb, co-founder of Musume restaurant within the hotel, stated that three injured individuals were restaurant employees. Fortunately, the restaurant was closed during the explosion, with no customers present and only a limited staff on duty.
The Sandman Signature hotel, a historic property with 245 rooms, was constructed in 1920 and is currently listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The investigation into the cause of the explosion is ongoing.
