Mabrian Technologies, specializing in Tourism Intelligence services, conducted an analysis of hotel accommodations in Portugal regarding sustainability practices during the Bolsa Turismo Lisboa (BTL) tourism show.
With sustainability a key focus at BTL, Mabrian’s analysis aimed to provide updated information on Portugal’s sustainability practices. They analyzed 2,485 hotels listed on major OTAs (Booking, Expedia, TripAdvisor), classifying them based on sustainability certification levels: no certification, bronze, silver, gold, and external certification.
Results showed that 52% of Portuguese hotels have some level of sustainability certification, higher than in other countries. Of these, 58% have bronze level, 31% silver, and 8% gold. Only 3% have external certification.
The analysis by hotel categories revealed that higher category hotels showed greater commitment to sustainability, with 71% of 5-star, 61% of 4-star, and 41% of 3-star hotels having certification.
A comparative analysis of average daily rates showed that hotels with sustainability certification offer prices 19% higher than those without.
Carlos Cendra, Marketing and Communication Director of Mabrian, commented, “The results are positive for Portugal, with over half its hotels certified in sustainability. These hotels can offer higher rates, encouraging others to consider certification.”
