As the fall season draws to a close, all attention turns to the holidays, and Trip advisor’s new Winter Travel Index uncovers where U.S. tourists are going for the season. According to the latest installment of the Trip advisor Travel Index for 2021, more than half (55%) of U.S. tourists are planning a vacation this winter.
Furthermore, 24% of Americans are still hesitant about winter vacations. Only nearly a third (30%) have actually booked their vacation, but three-quarters (74%) are planning to do so in November or December. As the coldest season approaches, the sector may experience a large increase in travel.
Although the vast majority (94 percent) of travellers will stay at home this winter, Americans are looking to broaden their horizons and try new things, with more than a third (37%) planning to travel somewhere they haven’t been before and more than a third (42%) booking a tour or activity.
For the first time since the outbreak began, New York City is the most popular tourist destination in the United States. Seaside locations trending in Trip advisor’s Fall Travel Index (Myrtle Beach, Ocean City, Honolulu, Virginia Beach) are less popular, as more cities (Los Angeles, Savannah) and Anaheim, home to Disneyland, are regaining popularity. Further alterations include a growing interest in visiting foreign cities such as Paris, London, and Rome.
The most popular travel dates for winter travels in the United States are December 16, December 30, and November 24, just in time for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Family and mid-range hotels are the most popular hotel types. A pool, complimentary breakfast, all-inclusive resorts, beaches, and free cancellation are all popular hotel features. In addition, 67% of tourists planning a vacation this winter have already begun exploring future excursions.
77% of Americans say they are saving for Christmas vacation. The most significant element to consider when selecting a winter vacation is the cost of travel (39%). 32 percent will spend more than last year, while 58% will spend the same. The most popular presents that respondents wish to offer this year are gift cards for shops or restaurants. However, nearly one-fifth (17%) prefer to give away travel tickets.
