Los Cabos has recently been named as Mexico’s top location for wellness holidays. Despite stiff competition from neighboring Mexican coastal cities such as Cancun and Puerto Vallarta Los Cabos has emerged a relatively lesser known beach retreat to international stardom in 2022. It is already Latin America’s undisputed leader in luxury travel, a current partnership with Airbnb will turn it into an official digital nomad haven.
According to research conducted by the Global Wellness Institute (GWI), a non-profit organization whose goal is to promote the movement globally, Mexico and, to a lesser extent, Los Cabos have been at the forefront of the ‘wellness scene, which has seen a boom since it was recognized as an emerging market in 2017.
GWI confirmed that Mexico has the ‘highest presence’ of wellness centers in Latin America. Historically, there has been little demand for this form of tourism; but, as the findings reveal, the health worry caused by the health crisis has renewed interest in both ‘physical and psychological well-being.
The Los Cabos Hotel Association (LCHA) describes wellness as “nature-based tourism in which relaxing methods such as meditation and good eating are frequently advocated.” Numerous Cabo resorts already promote a quieter ambiance, with lush green spaces and spas offering body treatments and other therapies.
Tourists have picked two hotels as the best for holistic vacations:
- Casa Dorada
- Only one Palmilla
Lilzi Orcí Fregoso, the Executive President of the LCHA, noted herself the pandemic has changed the profile of the average Cabo guest. “they want ‘open spaces’ and closer contact with nature, corroborating earlier findings that concluded 74 percent of travelers are looking for ‘natural world experiences”.
“The Capes go ‘very well with this trend because it has a lot to offer on the nature front, such as a scenic coastline featuring the iconic arched geological formation jutting out of the ocean, marine parks, and protected natural reserves, and countless sandy beaches that are perfect for sunbathing and swimming.”
The Executive President noted that Los Cabos must sustain its competitiveness in the niche by further upgrading its five-star goods or constructing additional wellness centers. If it maintains its current trajectory, it has the potential to overtake Cancun as the country’s most popular sunny getaway.
So far in 2022, the twin destination of The Capes has collected a record rise of 17.9 percent compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019, outpacing Cancun’s 14.6 percent and any other tourist site in Mexico. It probably helped that it has generally escaped bad headlines in the aftermath of a nationwide violent rise.
