The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has announced a significant milestone with its Hotel Sustainability Basics (Basics) program, which has now verified 3,400 properties across nearly 80 countries.
This initiative aims to assist hoteliers in enhancing their sustainability practices, setting a higher standard for the global hospitality industry. Overseen by reputable verifiers Green Key and SGS, the program guides hotels through a 12-step process to reduce carbon emissions, promote nature conservation, and ensure local benefit from their operations.
This achievement marks a crucial advancement towards a more sustainable future for the Travel & Tourism sector. Leading hotel groups from countries like Germany, China, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates have embraced this initiative, showcasing a global eagerness to progress in sustainability efforts.
In an effort to strengthen industry alignment on sustainability, Basics has formed strategic partnerships, including a collaboration with BeCause to enhance relationships with Online Travel Agents (OTAs). This partnership offers a platform for hotels dedicated to sustainability, facilitating greater visibility and connections within the industry.
WTTC President & CEO, Julia Simpson, emphasized the importance of this milestone, stating that reaching 3,400 verified properties is a clear indication of the industry’s readiness to embrace sustainability on a global scale. Major hotel brands like Jin Jiang, Louvre Hotels Group, Choice Hotels, and Radisson Hotel Group have adopted Basics, further solidifying its impact in the industry.
