Document management software SmallPDF evaluated data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to rank every sector’s quit rates β the percentage of total workers resigning in the industry each month β and quit levels, which reflect the total number of people quitting each month. Between April and August 2022, when the survey was conducted, an average of 5.8% of the workforce in the lodging and food services business, which includes fast food workers, waiters, and cooks, left their positions.
During the research, an average of more than 773,600 workers departed each month. The fact that 128,000 more workers departed their positions in August 2022 than in August 2021 indicates a huge shift in staffing. The retail trade business, which includes cashiers, customer service agents, and stock clerks, had an average leave rate of 3.82% between April and August 2022, with an average of 600,400 workers resigning each month. In the business, over 109,000 fewer workers resigned in August 2017 compared to August 2021. The arts, entertainment, and leisure business, which includes fitness trainers, recreation attendants, and musicians, is rated third on the list.
This is because the average leave rate between April 2022 and August 2022 was 3.58%, despite the low overall staff count. August 2022 will see almost 7,000 more workers leaving the business than in August 2021. Included in the professional and business services sector are attorneys, accountants, architects, and others.
Between April and August of 2022, around 754,000 workers departed monthly. On average, 3.36 percent of employees are left over these months. 63,000 fewer workers resigned in August 2022 than in August 2021. Between April and August of this year, the transportation, warehousing, and utility business, which includes pilots, bus drivers, and truck drivers, had an average of 199,400 quits each month. The quit rate was, on average, 2.82 percent every month. August 2022’s quit rate was 32,000 more than August 2021’s quit rate.
Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson for SmallPDF said: βThe news has been filled with stories about unionizing within companies, striking and more due to wages and treatment issues from employees, and this data highlights which industries are losing the largest part of their workforce. From an individual perspective, workers can ensure that if they do decide to quit, they do so in a professional manner, by using a template resignation letter.β
