Pittsburgh Airport new terminal featuring advanced technology

Pittsburgh Airport unveils its tech-forward, eco-friendly new terminal.

Pittsburgh Airport Opens New Terminal with Cutting-Edge Technology and Sustainability

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) officially opened its brand-new terminal on November 18, 2025, unveiling a $1.7 billion transformation project designed to redefine passenger experience and regional connectivity. The 811,000-square-foot, three-level terminal features cutting-edge technology, sustainable energy solutions including a microgrid that makes the airport completely energy self-sufficient, and a passenger-centric design focused on streamlining travel. This modern terminal replaces the outdated facility built for the previous airline hub and positions PIT as a vital gateway for Western Pennsylvania and global travelers.

Passengers benefit from significant upgrades such as a consolidated security checkpoint with 12 TSA lanes (up from 7), a faster baggage system that halves delivery times by reducing conveyor belt length, and an enhanced international arrivals area for more efficient customs processing. The 3,300-space smart parking garage includes real-time space indicators and a new terminal lot just a five-minute walk from the front door. Unique features include four outdoor terraces offering fresh air and scenic views of Pittsburgh’s skyline, as well as an innovative Skybridge inspired by the iconic Fort Pitt Tunnel that links landside and airside terminals with an intuitive passenger flow across two distinct levels.

Designed by Gensler + HDR in collaboration with Luis Vidal + Architects, the terminal incorporates local materials and craftsmanship, reflecting the spirit of the Pittsburgh community. The opening represents a major economic boost, with an estimated $2.5 billion impact and the creation of over 14,000 jobs during construction. PIT CEO Christina Cassotis described the terminal as “a love letter to our community” that combines modern innovation with regional pride. The project has received admiration for its emphasis on sustainability, operational efficiency, accessibility, and passenger comfort—setting a new industry standard for airport design.
