Vietravel, Vietnam’s premier tour operator, is championing a novel approach to stimulate local tourism recovery by proposing the introduction of a luxury train service. This five-star train, developed in collaboration with the Vietnam Railways Corporation, aims to redefine travel experiences with opulent bedrooms, modern amenities including gyms and entertainment facilities, and a dining car serving regional specialties crafted by local chefs.
Adorned with captivating local artwork, the proposed train aspires to offer passengers a distinctive 5-star journey, aligning with the increasing popularity of train travel in Vietnam. Last year witnessed a 15% surge in domestic tourists opting for train services and a notable 20% increase in international visitors choosing train travel, according to statistics from the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism.
Managed by the state-owned Vietnam Railways, Vietnam’s railway system spans an extensive 2,600-kilometer network. The flagship North-South Railway, stretching 1,726 kilometers between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, serves as the primary route. The majority of the national railway network utilizes a meter gauge, complemented by some standard and mixed gauge lines in the north.
The roots of Vietnam’s railway system trace back to the 1880s, with significant expansions occurring during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the establishment of the Yunnan–Vietnam and North–South railways.
Despite facing bombing attacks and subsequent damage during World War II and the Vietnam War, the rail network demonstrated resilience. The main lines swiftly underwent restoration, returning to service after the conflicts concluded.
