A recent global sustainability survey conducted by Booking.com has uncovered a growing sense of weariness and disillusionment among travelers when it comes to sustainable travel practices. The survey, which gathered insights from over 31,000 respondents across 34 countries, paints a complex picture of the current state of sustainable travel.
While the majority of respondents (83%) stated that sustainable travel is important to them, and 75% expressed a desire to travel more sustainably in the coming year, the survey also revealed a concerning trend. Nearly half (45%) of the respondents said that sustainability is not a primary consideration when planning or booking their trips. This disconnect between the stated importance of sustainable travel and the actual decision-making process suggests a growing sense of frustration among travelers.
One of the key factors contributing to this disillusionment is the perceived lack of tangible sustainability efforts in the destinations themselves. Over a third (34%) of respondents felt that it was “pointless” to act more sustainably when the destination they were visiting was not implementing its own sustainability practices. This sentiment highlights the need for a more holistic and coordinated approach to sustainable tourism, where travelers’ individual efforts are supported and amplified by the destinations they visit.
Furthermore, the survey findings indicate that the responsibility for driving progress on sustainability lies primarily with travel service providers, according to 43% of the respondents. This underscores the crucial role that airlines, hotels, and other industry players must play in making sustainable travel options more accessible, transparent, and trustworthy for consumers.
Danielle D’Silva, the head of sustainability at Booking.com, emphasized the importance of the industry’s continued efforts to address this challenge. “While many travelers have retained a sense of optimism and a desire to have a more positive impact, there is a critical opportunity for the industry to accelerate efforts to make those choices easier for everyone,” she said.
As the travel industry navigates the evolving landscape of sustainable tourism, this Booking.com survey serves as a wake-up call, highlighting the need for a more collaborative and comprehensive approach to addressing travelers’ growing concerns and expectations around sustainability.
