Merseyrail has introduced a game-changing Tap & Go ticketing system across its Liverpool City Region network, marking a new era for smart and seamless travel. Mirroring London’s successful Oyster card model, passengers can now simply tap in before boarding and tap out when they finish their journey, eliminating the need to queue for paper tickets. This contactless system guarantees the lowest fare, ensures convenience, and offers daily and weekly price caps to save commuters money.
The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority (LCRCA) approved the system in 2020, and after rigorous testing and positive passenger feedback, it launched officially in August 2025. Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram highlighted the length and complexity of the project but praised its success and the overwhelmingly positive reception from travellers, with 96% rating the experience as good or very good.
Merseyrail Managing Director Neil Grabham said the Tap & Go system significantly improves accessibility and customer experience by removing barriers to travel. This initiative is part of Merseyrail’s broader commitment to modernization and fostering stronger connections with the communities it serves.
