As airport strikes commenced throughout the country, Lufthansa, the flag carrier, announced the cancellation of over 1,300 scheduled flights on Feb 13, 2023.
The Verdi union called strikes at seven German airports, including Lufthansa hubs Frankfurt and Munich, as well as Bremen and Hamburg.
Lufthansa said all flights were cancelled at Frankfurt and Munich today.
“We regret the enormous impact of this strike, which is being carried out at the expense of our passengers,” Lufthansa said. “We are not party to the collective bargaining and have no influence on it.”
The ongoing airport strikes have caused the cancellation of at least 1,000 additional flights operated by other airlines, impacting an estimated 300,000 passengers. Lufthansa has provided rebooking options and suggested rail services as an alternative where feasible. It also gave assurance that services will be ‘largely back to normal’ by Saturday.
The union is seeking a 10% pay increase.
