Tuesday, December 20th, a United Airlines plane from Hong Kong returned for an emergency landing owing to technical troubles, with fire and medical crews on high alert.
According to the Fire Services Department, 34 fire engines, seven ambulances, and seven fire boats were placed on standby just after 11 a.m. in response to a report of engine difficulties with aircraft 2831. The incident involved a cargo jet that left Hong Kong at 10:47 am and was en route to Guam, according to a spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Department.
A spokesperson for United Airlines confirmed that the aircraft returned to the airport soon after takeoff due to a “mechanical problem,” with no passengers on board. She said that the plane had returned to the city’s airport due to a potential malfunction with the engine system.
“No smoke or flames were reported at the scene and no casualties were reported in the incident,” the Fire Services Department said.
The airplane landed safely at 11:39 a.m., according to the spokesperson, who added that the Civil Aviation Department will follow up with United Airlines over the incident.
The Airport Authority said it received a report at around 11 am that the flight would return to the city, adding that operations were not affected by the incident.
