According to Instagram data analyzed by experts at NZCasinoClub, the Hobbiton Movie Set in Matamata, New Zealand, has been ranked as the most picturesque destination in the country. The analysis looked at hashtag data for 25 locations across New Zealand to determine the most tagged locations on Instagram.
The Hobbiton Movie Set, famous for its role in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, topped the list with 473,000 posts containing the hashtag #hobbiton. The set features more than 40 Hobbit Holes nestled in rolling green hills, attracting over half a million visitors annually.
Milford Sound, a fiord in Fiordland National Park on the South Island, claimed the second spot with 445,000 Instagram posts. Known for its stunning beauty and towering Mitre Peak, Milford Sound is a popular destination for travelers seeking breathtaking landscapes.
In third place is Lake Tekapo, a tiny township with just 720 residents but boasting 272,000 Instagram posts tagged with #laketekapo. The town is renowned for its clear lakes, mountain scenery, and vibrant wildflowers in the spring.
Mount Cook, the highest mountain in New Zealand at 3,724 meters, secured the fourth spot with 218,000 posts tagged #mountcook. Sir Edmund Hillary allegedly climbed Mount Cook in preparation for his ascent of Mount Everest.
Rounding out the top five is Cathedral Cove, located in Mercury Bay, with 122,000 posts featuring the hashtag #cathedralcove. The natural archway provides a stunning backdrop for visitors looking to capture their travels.
The analysis highlights the popularity of these locations on social media and their status as must-visit destinations in New Zealand.
