In a ground-breaking achievement, IndiGo, India’s leading carrier, has etched its name in history by becoming the first Indian airline to carry a staggering 100 million passengers within a single calendar year. This feat propels IndiGo into the exclusive league of global carriers operating on such a monumental scale, firmly establishing itself among the world’s top 10 airlines by passenger traffic.
Celebrating its 17th anniversary this year, IndiGo has not only achieved this milestone but has done so with remarkable speed, making it one of the fastest airlines to reach the 100 million passenger mark. In the calendar year 2022, the airline warmly welcomed 78 million passengers on board, slightly surpassing pre-Covid19 levels. The new milestone reflects a substantial 22% increase in passenger traffic for the year 2023.
IndiGo has been making waves beyond just passenger numbers. Earlier this year, the airline achieved another remarkable first for India by operating over 2,000 flights a day. Currently, IndiGo connects to 118 destinations, including 32 international locations.
Pieter Elbers, Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo, expressed his delight on this historic occasion, stating, “We are incredibly delighted to achieve this historic milestone, welcoming aboard 100 million passengers in a year. This landmark figure is the result of the love and trust shown by our customers and the hard work and passion of all IndiGo colleagues.”
Elbers emphasized the significance of the achievement as a validation of IndiGo’s strategy executed diligently over the years. He added, “At IndiGo, we are proud to give wings to the nation, by connecting people and aspirations for the past 17 years, making air travel accessible for hundreds of millions of Indians.”
In 2022, IndiGo strategically pursued its growth plans under three pillars: ‘Reassure, Develop, and Create.’ To support its ambitious goal of doubling in size and scale by the end of the decade, the airline placed a historic order for 500 new aircraft with Airbus, in addition to the earlier 450+ aircraft orders.
This landmark achievement in a single year underscores the positive trajectory for both IndiGo and Indian aviation as a whole. The government’s vision for India’s growth, with aviation as a catalyst, is proving beneficial not only to the nation but also to the tourism and hospitality sector. For a country as geographically vast and culturally diverse as India, aviation plays a pivotal role in bridging distances and bringing people closer.
In the last six months alone, IndiGo has expanded its international reach by adding over 20 new routes to its network while strengthening domestic connectivity. Looking ahead, the airline aims to include destinations like Bali, Indonesia, and Medina, Saudi Arabia, to its network, focusing on sustainable growth both financially and environmentally. IndiGo continues to serve the mobility needs of its customers, contributing to the progress of India.
