According to recent research commissioned by the AHLA Foundation, the charitable arm of the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA), the hotel industry is expected to see robust demand for jobs over the next five years, surpassing the overall market job growth.
The AHLA Foundation collaborated with Lightcast, a leading labor market analytics firm, to analyze demographic and growth trends. The goal was to identify and map career pathways in the hotel and lodging industry. The result of this research is a dynamic, interactive dashboard that allows job seekers to explore and compare roles, requirements, and compensation across various hospitality careers.
Currently, the hotel industry employs 1.8 million workers in the United States. The AHLA Foundation’s report projects a job growth rate of 12% in the hotel industry over the next five years, compared to the nation’s overall job growth rate of 8.0%. A significant portion of this demand is expected at the entry level or in roles that do not require college degrees, highlighting the hotel industry’s potential as a source of job mobility.
Anna Blue, President of AHLA Foundation, stated, “It’s an attractive time to enter the hotel industry. A key part of our work at AHLA Foundation is supporting the recruitment, retention, and advancement of people in our industry. Understanding the entry points where careers begin, where they lead, and what paths they take is a critical step to helping find their home in hospitality.”
Using its real-time, proprietary databases and industry parsing, Lightcast created the interactive dashboard to illustrate career pathways in the hotel and lodging industry from 2010 to 2023.
